Witches salt, what is it?
Its a mixture of many different things and often referred to as 'black salt' because of its color. Or Hoodoo salt along with many other names.
Its is a fantastic way to protect your house or space that you reside or work in.
My mixture never comes out completely black and that's okay - it never has! It all depends on what you mix together and how much you mix! I love to include lots of ashes from my daily incense burning and so mine stays quite grey! Allot of people crush theirs to a fine powder but I've always found leaving it a little chunkier helps personally as long as it is mixed it will work wonders!
How To Make & Store

You will need
- Ashes collected from practices, incense or burnt herbs
- Salt (sea salt preferred)
- Black pepper
- Activated charcoal
- Mortar & Pestle
- Optional herbs
- A spoon to mix
- A container
- You may also need a source of fire if you wish to burn the herbs down
Salt is a fantastic form of protection within it's self. It's been used for years all by it's self and renowned for its properties! I would highly recommend sea salt which is readily available in most stores otherwise in a pinch kosher salt will work fine as well.
Black pepper will give your witches salt the kick it needs - associated with Mars, masculine energy and the element Air it will drive away any evil or negativity.
Activated charcoal is associated with the element of Fire, Air and Earth and is fantastic within its cleansing abilities. This will also give the salt its black color. You can use food dye if you really want to give your salt extra depth but it is not necessary.
Ash - you can gather this from almost anywhere. However if you have used it in practice it will be infused with the magickal properties you have put into it. I love adding the ash from all my incense because - why let good ash go to waste right?! I also burn herbs with specific properties for that extra boost!
1) Combine your ground black pepper and salt - you can use your mortar and pestle for this. You only need a pinch of pepper!
2) Add your ashes that you have collected and give a good mix. At this point you may burn some herbs, grind them down and add them too! (herb meanings down below)
3) Add your activated charcoal a bit at a time to achieve the desired color your are after - remember it doesn't need to be pitch black to work.
That's it! You are now ready to store and use your very own witches salt! You may say a prayer or enchantment at this point it is entirely down to the individual.
How To Use

One of the best uses of witches salt I have found is for protecting the home. It doesn't need to be obvious either. Here on my bathroom window I have placed a small jar within an oil burner. I now know my window - which is a entrance to my home is protected and I don't have everybody that uses the bathroom asking me about it. Hidden within plain site! I have these dotted around my entire house - behind curtains, plant pots . . . Wherever there is an entrance to my house. As for the outside doorways. Sprinkling a little along the threshold works just as well and doesn't draw any eyes as its outside and blends in with the rest of the dirt/mess out there. Of course if you feel the need you can go all out and cover your doorstep but imagine the footprints brought in with that!
Witches salt is also great when used within you're practices. It offers high levels of protection and wards of allot of negativity. If you have an altar consider placing some near on on it to add that extra kick.
Adding Extras
I like to add extra's to my witches salt - although this is not needed at all. Certain herbs I will burn in a heat resistant container and then after grinding will add to my mixture just before I add in the activated charcoal. Sometimes I will add some spices too!
Here are some options and their magickal properties - but as always with witchcraft it is entirely up to the individual.
- Rosemary - cleansing, strength, protection, solar energy, memory, invigoration.
- Sage - cleansing, luck, home blessings, wisdom, longevity, prosperity.
- Lavender - Peace, love, physic protection, healing, calm, clairvoyance.
- Cinnamon - Healing, home protection, consecration, prosperity, success and victory.
Of course there is a world of things you can add to your own witches salt!
TIP - If the activated charcoal you have isn't a smooth powder consider grinding before adding to the mixture. As always happy witching and blessed bee 🐝
